Doctor of Professional Studies in Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies Dprof

This DProf is for therapeutic practitioners who wish to extend their expertise by contributing original knowledge in a professional and organisational context, which comes out of experience and practice.

Course overview

Our DProf course recognises the achievements of practitioners in the disciplines of counselling and psychotherapy. The DProf facilitates the generation of original knowledge that comes out of experience and practice and enables a fresh and meaningful contribution to be given to practice-based knowledge and dialogue.

The Division of Counselling and Psychotherapy contains several nationally and internationally recognised researchers among its staff. They input onto the teaching and supervision of research on this DProf course.

There is a vibrant research community at Chester, consisting of both PhD and DProf research students, who meet regularly together, alongside the research staff, to support each other and stimulate new thinking and research ideas.

Assessment

Assessment in Phases 1 and 2 is by means of essays, publishable articles, presentations, and a research proposal. In Phase 3, assessment will be by thesis and viva. Part-time students are expected to give at least 16 hours (part-time) a week to their studies.

Job prospects

This course assists in the development of practitioner-researchers who, with a doctorate and a research reputation, can go on to fulfil therapeutic, academic and management positions in their chosen areas of work.

To be eligible for the course, you will need to have an MA or MSc in a counselling/psychotherapy-related discipline (with a grade of 65% or above for the research dissertation), plus practitioner experience in counselling/psychotherapy.
