What is Human Resource Management MSc?

Deepen your understanding of human resource management and network alongside professionals with a rich mix of experiences. Directly aligned to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s (CIPD) knowledge requirements, the MSc and PGDip in Human Resource Management offers you the opportunity to build your network. You’ll be studying as part of a community of students with a rich mix of professional experiences which will enhance your awareness.

The programmes are designed to develop your strategic thinking skills as you deepen your understanding of how human resource management creates competitive advantage for organisations.

Study for a Master’s

By studying full-time, including day and evening attendance subject to timetabling, you will gain the knowledge requirements for Full Membership of the CIPD. You’ll study alongside part-time students who are also practitioners – this creates a rich learning community where professional experiences can be shared and discussed. The course places a strong emphasis on active learning and business application to complement theory.

You’ll have the opportunity to attend an employment tribunal or other HR related events; you will also be required to attend on-campus CIPD events to enhance your knowledge and expand your professional network.

Possible careers

Advance your career within Human Resource Management or Human Resource Development by working towards senior manager and director level positions. Successful completion of the MSc Human Resource Management and Postgraduate Diploma offers Associate membership of the CIPD and provides the basis to work towards CIPD Chartered Member status.

Modules

This module aims to provide students with a rigorous framework of knowledge and understanding concerning people management and development. The module seeks to familiarise students with major contemporary research evidence on employment and effective approaches to human resource (HR) and learning and development (L&D) practice. Research focusing on the links between people management practices and positive organisational outcomes is covered, as is research that highlights major contemporary changes and developments in practice. Second, the module introduces major debates about theory and practice in the specific fields of leadership, flexibility and change management, the aim being to help them become effective managers as well as effective HR specialists, managing others fairly and effectively and increasing levels of engagement, commitment, motivation and performance. The module also introduces the major aims of HR and L&D and explores how these are achieved in practice in different types of organisational scenario. Finally, the module requires students to reflect critically on theory and practice from an ethical and professional standpoint and provides opportunities for applied learning and continuous professional development.

To study the full-time MSc, you will need one or more of the following: To have a minimum 2:2 undergraduate degree with an interest in the area; OR have practical work / organisational experience at degree level; OR have an appropriate pre-Masters programme and have practical work / organisational experience at degree level.
