About Postgraduate Drama Therapy

Drama therapy is a specialised form of psychotherapy that draws on the expressive and creative aspects of drama, music, movement and storytelling to help patients work through issues in their lives.

Postgraduate students of drama therapy may study a variety of theory and techniques or focus in on certain processes, particularly in a research capacity. They may go on to work in healthcare services, vulnerable person support or individual psychotherapy settings.

There are more than five drama therapy courses available at four universities in the UK.

What to expect

If you want a career as a drama therapist, you’ll need a postgraduate qualification in drama therapy that is also approved by the Health and Care Professions Council. To be accepted onto a postgraduate course you will usually need an undergraduate degree in a related subject such as drama or psychology.

The topics covered will vary from course to course, but common modules include, drama therapy theory and practice, movement theory and research methods. You might also look at other therapies such as art, music or play therapy, exploring creative arts in mental health more widely.

On graduating, you can work as a drama therapist helping clients of all ages who might have a range of personal and social difficulties.
