About Postgraduate Special Education

Special education is a student-oriented approach to teaching and supporting those with specific needs, such as those with disabilities or learning challenges. It can be an immensely rewarding field of education, where you’ll build personal relationships with students requiring a diverse range of academic approaches. Your work will foster an inclusive community, with a variety of individual learning plans and teaching methods, sharing the same space to learn essential skills and foundational knowledge.

Special education professionals are needed everywhere in the UK, and you’ll find more than 20 universities which offer courses at master’s level. Generally, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree with minimum second class (2:2) or equivalent in any subject to get started. Courses range from a year full-time, to two or three years part-time with distance learning options available.

What to Expect

This course gives students firm grounding in how to identify and understand many different special needs across a large range of age groups. Topics frequently covered include autism, dyslexia, social and emotional psychological issues, and students learn high level communication and leadership skills. The curriculum covers areas such as differentiated instruction, behavioural interventions and assistive technology; assessment includes regular teaching observations, coursework and reflective essays.

Graduates are prepared for roles as special education teachers, inclusion coordinators and educational consultants, with a course that is accredited by the British Association of Special Education. The programme upholds the highest educational standards, enhancing employment opportunities in the field of special needs education.
