About Postgraduate Nursing

Nursing is one of the most foundational roles within the healthcare system, and one which requires a combination of technical, organisational, interpersonal and communication skills. The four main types of nursing degrees include adults, children, learning disabilities and mental health, and at postgraduate level it’s likely that you’ll begin to specialise your training into one of these key areas.

There are more than 50 universities in the UK which offer a nursing PGDip, and it is a great option for those looking for career advancement. You’ll typically study for a duration of two years full-time, requiring a 2.2 undergraduate degree in a relevant healthcare related subject, as well as a period of professional experience. There are also well-established routes onto a nursing PGDip through work experience alone, and this usually requires three years’ post-qualification work experience as a registered nurse, supported by professional references.

What to expect

Programme structures vary depending on the specific university and course you choose; however, you will most likely spend a significant amount of time in practice where you will be appropriately supported and assessed. You can anticipate gaining advanced clinical skills, developing critical thinking abilities, communication skills and evidence-based practices.

You’ll also develop leadership and management skills essential for clinical work, and you’ll learn to operate as part of an interdisciplinary team of health professionals that include doctors, pharmacists, managers, and many more.

One you complete the PGDip programme, you are eligible to register as a qualified adult nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). This registration is essential for practicing nursing in the UK.
