About Postgraduate

Studying an MSc in dentistry allows for further specialisation within the dental field. In the UK, an MSc degree in dentistry is typically reserved for applicants who hold an approved dental qualification and a minimum of two years' experience. Popular degree specialisations can include areas such as restorative dentistry, endodontology paediatric dentistry, implant dentistry or oral and maxillofacial surgery.

You’ll explore the latest advancements in dental research, techniques, and technologies, engaging in clinical training and practical hands-on experience. Dental work is a highly important element of public healthcare, and dental experts are in high demand. There are over 100 MSc courses across the UK offering different types of specialism with courses generally lasting between one to four years.

What to expect

You can expect both theoretical and practical experience, and exposure to advanced diagnosis and treatment planning procedures, clinical practice, as well as undertaking laboratory work for patients. Assessment takes place through a variety of methods including written essays, academic and clinical oral examinations, research projects and a dissertation. There will likely be a continuous assessment of simulated laboratory course work, practical tests and the study of clinical case reports.

Upon completion of the course, you can expect to emerge as a highly skilled dental professional, working at the cutting edge of a specific field within dentistry. This makes you capable of providing specialised dental care in a diversity of clinical settings and opens the door to consultancy and research work.
