About Postgraduate Information Technology

Information technology (IT) is the field of study which deals with many aspects of the digital world. From cybersecurity to data science and software engineering to digital project management, information technology specialists design and maintain the technological systems on which society relies.

The subject is broad and very versatile, and well-trained IT specialists are in high demand. There are more than 30 UK universities which offer master’s degree courses in IT and these are available with a multitude of specialisms, such as applied computing, asset management and communication technology. Entry requirements vary between specialisms, but generally include a strong undergraduate degree in a related field. There are full-time courses which typically take one year to complete and part-time courses which usually take two years to complete.

What to Expect

In this course, you'll learn how IT applies to businesses and the systems which they depend on. You'll understand how to manage large databases, cloud services and their applications, service integration and human-centred design. You can expect a decent amount of self-directed learning, with assessment taking the form of design projects, coursework, presentations and examinations. You’ll work towards a final dissertation project under an academic tutor’s supervision and may also undertake a work experience placement as part of the course requirements.

Once graduated, you’ll hold a highly transferable qualification which will allow you to work in a large variety of professional organisations, in roles as IT managers, systems analysts or data scientists. You’ll also be well placed to continue your education to PhD or doctoral level, within the field of IT.
