About Postgraduate Economics

Economics is the study of how societies manage resources to meet their needs. Economists use models to understand and predict how people and societies make choices about finances and commodities;studying economics at master’s level allows students to delve into advanced economic theories, quantitative methods and policy analysis. The programme covers microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics, and serves as excellent preparation for a variety of competitive professions.

It is an extremely popular field of study, with more than 350 courses available at master’s level, offering a huge selection of specialisations such as banking and finance, political economy, development strategies, global policy and green economies. Entry requirements usually include a strong undergraduate degree in economics or a closely related field, often with a minimum classification of 2:1.

What to Expect

An MSc in economics offers a deeper dive into a more specialised area of study than is typical for an undergraduate course. Modules will vary based on course specifics; however, you can expect to learn through lectures, seminars, workshops, essays and a considerable amount of self-directed study. Assessment typically involves examinations, research projects and presentations, with a final dissertation project on a topic of your choosing.

Graduates are well-prepared for roles as economists, analysts or policy advisors, working in both the private and public sector in business organisations all over the UK and abroad. An MSc degree also offers a superb platform from which to advance to PhD level study.
