Business development is a field of study which revolves around fostering the long-term success and sustainability of a company. It can include a diversity of activities such as identifying new markets, increasing revenue, boosting engagement, building relationships and implementing strategies to enhance business performance. It is a widely applicable degree subject and there are 14 master’s level courses in the UK which provide a comprehensive education into the inner workings of business organisations, teaching the skill needed to thrive in these professional environments.
Typically, courses run for one year of full-time study, but can often be completed on a part-time basis, usually in two to three years. The curriculum covers areas such as strategic planning, entrepreneurship and market analysis, and entry requirements typically include a relevant undergraduate degree in business, management or a related field.
Studying a master’s course in business development involves a lot of self-driven study, with plenty of time spent researching, reading and preparing assessments. You’ll attend lectures, workshops and tutorials and benefit from a range of support from academic tutors. There will also be a final dissertation project at the end of the year, where you’ll write a long-form assignment into a topic of your choosing. This can involve your own research and analysis, which gives you an opportunity to explore new areas of the field and contribute to the body of academic work which surrounds it.
You’ll be assessed through coursework, presentations, simulated scenarios and a business development project. After graduating, you’ll be ready to take onprofessional roles as business development managers, consultants and entrepreneurs, and will also be well placed to continue your studies at PhD level.
