About Postgraduate Psychological Counselling

Counselling psychology is a specialism within the psychological field that focuses specifically on the development and application of psychotherapeutic techniques to help people deal with serious issues in their lives.

Giving patients insights into their personalities and thought processes, addressing issues including anxiety, depression, psychosis, bereavement and abuse, counselling psychologists use evidence backed theory and contemporary practices to provide treatment.

There are over 10 different courses offered at 12 universities in the UK to choose from including MScs, PhDs and PG certificates.

What to expect

Postgraduate courses in psychological counselling are often designed for students who already have an undergraduate qualification in psychology or a related subject and want to specialise in this area.

Course content will vary but general topics include developing your professional practice and research skills, studying psychological assessment theories and practice and receiving psychotherapy as part of your learning experience.

As well as completing academic course work, you will also need to do at least 450 hours of supervised counselling in a variety of settings.

Graduates in this field will be well placed for careers in clinical treatment and research settings, as well as independent or private counsellors and therapists.
