About Postgraduate Psychology

Psychology explores the complexities of the human mind and its associated behaviours. It considers the individual, as well as groups of people, and looks at biological and environmental influences, societal pressures, information processing, language, memory and much more.

It is a popular postgraduate subject, and you’ll find widespread options for courses at master’s, PhD, and doctoral levels of study all over the UK. Most courses allow for specialisation in particular areas within psychology, which means you can organise your studies to suit the type of career pathway you intend to pursue after completing your education.

Entry onto a postgraduate course will carry certain academic requirements, and typically also includes a mandatory amount of professional practice hours.

What to expect

Psychology is a diverse discipline, and whichever type of postgraduate course you are applying for will cover a broad spectrum of material, including cognitive, social and developmental theory, as well as practical tasks and clinical aspects. You’ll learn both theoretical and practical approaches to the subject, and be assessed using a variety of methods, from formal examinations to coursework, work placements, presentations and original research projects.

The training standards required for psychological practice in the UK are established by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and all courses will adhere to these. Most courses also hold full accreditation from the British Psychological Society (BPS), to which you can register as a full member after graduation.
