About Postgraduate Sports Physiotherapy

Sports physiotherapy is a specialist area within physiotherapy, itself one of the medical disciplines. It focuses on the treatment of injuries and conditions specifically caused by or related to exercise and sports.

Postgraduate students in sports physiotherapy may come from a general physiotherapy, sports science or medical background looking to develop advanced skills and knowledge for jobs across professional sports, the national health service and private healthcare, as well as sports and leisure.

Students can choose from more than 20 postgraduate programmes in sports physiotherapy at 17 universities across the UK.

What to expect

You will typically need a good bachelor’s degree in a related field or considerable relevant work experience if your undergraduate degree is in a different area.

General topics you might cover include sports injury management, sports rehabilitation, biomechanics and sports physiology. You’ll usually do a clinical placement where you’ll gain practical experience working with clients.

Following this type of study will launch a range of job opportunities including sports physiotherapist, sports rehabilitation specialist, sports scientist, sports coach or academic researcher.
