UQ Fire at the QFES Live Fire Campus

On Monday 22 April 2017, five students from UQ Fire took a trip to the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Live Fire Campus in Whyte Island to participate in a Live Fire Demonstration.

Students had the opportunity to gear up in a full firefighting suit complete with breathing apparatus. The students were led into a compartment loaded with flammable fuel and there they had the chance to experience firsthand a controlled compartment fire. They were able to witness the fire dynamics and phenomena that they have been learning about through their research and lectures at The University of Queensland.

During the live demonstration, the students were able to see the progression of the fire as it grew and even had the opportunity to learn how to fight the fire under the guidance of the instructors as they used certain spray techniques to control and eventually extinguish the fire.

The instructors at Whyte Island were extremely accommodating and ensured that participant safety was the number one priority. The instructors were even generous enough to host a sit-down session after the demonstration to walk them through their thought processes and strategies for fighting fires various types of buildings (ranging from residential to industrial plants).

This was certainly a valuable experience for the students as they had the chance to experience how important it is for fire safety engineers and firefighters to collaborate during the research and design phase as firefighters could very-well end up in one of our designs.

Thanks again to the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) and the team at Whyte Island for the great experience.
