UQ Fire PhD candidate Ian Pope has completed a 7-month research exchange programme with the Building Research Establishment (BRE) Centre for Fire Safety Engineering at the University of Edinburgh.
Ian received the Sir Peter Gadsden Britain Australia Award 2018 from the Worshipful Company of Engineers, in coordination with the BRE Trust, supporting him to undertake an exchange at the University of Edinburgh from January to August 2018. Ian’s primary area of research is the fire performance of engineered bamboo structures, and his collaboration with researchers from the fire group in Edinburgh has helped him to develop models for evaluating and quantifying common sources of error for temperature measurements in fire experiments.
During the exchange, Ian presented his work to researchers at the University of Bath’s BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials and Imperial College London’s Hazelab, and also visited the BRE’s large-scale fire testing facility in Watford, building links for future collaborations.
Ian would like to thank the Worshipful Company of Engineers, and the University of Queensland and Edinburgh fire research groups, for supporting him throughout this exchange, and particularly Dr Rory Hadden for his supervision in Edinburgh.
