Dr Cristian Maluk was invited to speak at a seminar organised by the Concrete Institute of Australia; with a presentation entitled “Fire-Induced Concrete Spalling – The End of the Beginning”.
The presentation covered the state of the art in our understanding of fire-induced concrete spalling. While it is widely accepted that certain types of modern concretes and certain concrete structures applications have a higher propensity for spalling; we are just beginning to grapple with the consequences of concrete spalling during or even after a fire. This presentation described typical engineering design and construction tools for accounting for the potential of spalling occurring (in buildings and tunnel applications), and how new studies are aiming at tackling this scientific and concrete industry challenges.
