Vinny Gupta, Mohamad Lutfi Ramadhan and Juan Cuevas attended the 1st Asia-Pacific Combustion Institute Summer School (APCISS) hosted last month in Viña del Mar and at Federico Santa Maria Technical University in Valparaiso, Chile. The summer school involved over 60 students in combustion and fire from all over the world and featured renowned speakers such as Forman Williams, Jose Torero, Carlos Fernandez-Pello, Bart Merci, Guillermo Rein and many others. The purpose of the school was to introduce students to fundamental problems in fire, and to foster collaboration between research groups in the Asia Pacific and South America region.
Classes consisted of both theory and practical elements, with experimental and numerical workshops being attended by UQ students. Social events consisted of cocktail evenings and a Patagonian barbeque.
UQ Students presented their research at a student poster session for all the students, with Vinny Gupta being awarded the 1st place prize for research into flame spread in large open-plan compartments.
Our attendees to the summer school found the entire experience enriching, and in addition to picking up new knowledge and tools and forging many new relationships within the fire and combustion community have been forged. We would like to thank Dr Andres Fuentes from Federico Santa Maria Technical University, Dr Pedro Rezska from Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez and the supporting staff for a wonderful week in Chile.
