The University of Hull is one of the most innovative and influential institutions located in the north of England. Gaining university status in 1954, it is categorised as a ‘younger civic university’ and has nearly 70 years of educational heritage to draw upon, guiding its 15,000 students through an impressive curriculum of higher education designed to address the demands of industry and the needs of future generations.
The University of Hull is a fantastic place to study a postgraduate degree course. There are around 80 master’s postgraduate degree courses to choose from, spanning a comprehensive range of studies with particular research expertise in social justice, environmental technologies and maritime history.

Postgraduate

Each faculty is staffed with a motivated and enthusiastic team of academic tutors, lecturers, researchers and practitioners. They are widely experienced, with many having held influential roles in their professional work. When students join Hull, they become a valued member of a tight-knit community where the lecturers know their name.
Postgraduate entry requirements vary considerably, based on programme-specific details and variable modes of study. Applicants should typically hold a minimum lower second class Honours degree, or equivalent. Some courses may have additional requirements, and prospective applicants can check the course pages for full details.
Prior professional experience may be taken into account, while there are several alternative pathways to enrolment in most cases. The University of Hull admissions team considers each candidate on their individual merit and encourages anyone with a desire to study in Hull to submit an application.
PhD entry requirements usually require applicants to hold a master’s degree in a subject-relevant area with a research training element, or other significant research credentials.
Research degree applicants must also include a research proposal to enable the university to see whether they can match the candidate with a suitable supervisor. Additionally, there is a mandatory postgraduate training scheme for research degree applicants run by the Doctoral College.

Overall, the university has an impressive graduate employment rate of 95.7%, meaning that the vast majority of postgrad students are in work or further study fifteen months after graduation (HESA Graduate Outcomes 2019/20). The Hull University Students’ Union (HUSU) is an independent student-run organisation which operates as a separate entity to the university itself and performs many different functions for its student membership.
The union is the voice of representation for the student community, standing up for students’ rights and maintaining a positive dialogue with the university. It ensures fair treatment and inclusivity, campaigning for various student initiatives and implementing them on a university-wide scale.
HUSU is organised by a democratically elected team of student representatives, and has cultivated a close working partnership with the University of Hull. Together they work to enhance the student experience and create an exciting and diverse programme of events and activities to provide opportunities for socialising, learning, entertainment and contribution to the wider student culture.
The union has its own bar and student space and is a hub of activity throughout the year. It co-ordinates the many student clubs and societies which thrive at the university, and encourages students to look beyond the classroom and extend their horizons, learning new skills and making lasting friendships.
Clubs and societies
University is an ideal time to try new things, explore current interests and find like-minded people to share them with. At the University of Hull, there are more than 100 clubs and societies to discover, organised through the students’ union and representing a huge variety of interests and activities.
There are a range of options from course related groups like Biochemistry Society and Geography Society, to political groups, cultural associations such as Omani or Nigerian Society, Yoga and Wellbeing, Anime, Arts and Crafts, religious groups and so much more. Plus, there are 50 Athletic Union clubs for anyone to join, run by Hull University Students’ Union.
These groups form the basis of student life around the university and provide a superb opportunity to meet people from beyond the classroom, or outside of the postgraduate sphere. Many are free to join and add a vital extra-curricular component to the university experience, often resulting in friendships which last a lifetime.
The university also encourages the establishment of new societies where they are not already offered, and can provide support and organisational advice to those wishing to start something new.
City life
With a population of around 260,000 residents, Hull is a great sized university city. It’s big enough that there’s always something new to do and small enough that it can be easily explored.
The city has recently undergone a comprehensive revamp, and now includes interactive fountains and an eye-catching lighting display in the central Queen Victoria Square. Hull’s historic marina and fruit market has also received significant new investment and are now the cultural hub of the city, featuring bars, music venues, art galleries and much more.
In 2013, Hull was designated the 2017 UK City of Culture, and this attracted significant investment into the city which has been put to good use. One thing which hasn’t changed though, is the people. Residents of Hull are routinely voted among the UK’s friendliest, so students will feel welcome and at home from the start of their studies.
The city is well set up for university goers, with a wide selection of affordable entertainment, from cinemas and live music to pubs, clubs, and award-winning fish and chip shops with student-friendly prices.
Finding suitable accommodation is one of the key elements of an enjoyable student experience. The University of Hull has excellent provision for student housing, with three halls of residence offering more than 2,300 on-campus rooms, with a convenient package of services.
While the majority of students living in halls of residence are undergraduate, the university has rooms available for postgraduate students who'd like to live on campus in 2023-24. Prices begin at £148.40 per week, and rooms are generally available to rent for either 41-, 43- or 51-week contracts.
There are three halls of residence at Hull: The Courtyard, Taylor Court, and Westfield Court. There is a large variety of room sizes and types, including standard and deluxe sizes, with options for either en-suite or shared bathroom facilities. Rooms are self-catered, and generally organised into flats of between 3 and 11 students who share a communal kitchen and living space. Flats of 8 students are the most usual, and Westfield Court and The Courtyard also offer studio flats.
Some postgraduate students prefer to source their own accommodation from the private rental market, and the university can offer advice and support through their Accommodation Hub to those in need of assistance.
Facilities
The University of Hull campus is located in the suburbs of north Hull, and is a self-contained learning environment which provides everything students need to live and work all on one, beautiful campus. Accommodation is located within easy walking distance of lecture theatres, laboratories and seminar rooms, and the student’s union building.
Hull has an impressive main library, which is a cutting-edge facility housing over a million books, journals and visual media for its postgraduate students to use. There is a mix of individual and group study spaces and an online service which allows student to access digital resources from anywhere in the world.
The library also has a Postgraduate Research Lounge on the second floor, which has 40 bookable workstations with or without a computer and is exclusively available for postgraduate researchers.
In addition to academic facilities, the campus is well serviced by cafés and coffee shops to make sure that students can easily grab a refreshing drink and a bite to eat between classes. There’s a mini supermarket on campus, as well as a Sports and Fitness Centre where students can keep fit and exercise recreationally.

Programmes are offered across each of the university’s four academic faculties. Hull is proud of its many research groups and expert staff.
