About Postgraduate Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is one of the main allied health professions, and it deals with the treatment of injury and disease by using physical methods such as massage, heat treatment and exercise rather than medication or surgery.

There are many specialisms within the field, and it is common for physiotherapists to focus on one area of expertise such as musculoskeletal, orthopaedics, endocrinology, sports medicine, women’s health, geriatrics, and many more.

Physiotherapy is a popular degree course in the UK, with more than 140 postgraduate courses offered across 65 higher education institutions. To pursue a master’s degree, candidates typically need a relevant undergraduate degree in physiotherapy or a related field. There are also two-year accelerated programmes which consider applicants with a strong background in a related discipline, provided they meet additional requirements. Practical experience in a healthcare setting is often required.

What to expect

At master’s degree level, you’ll delve into the anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics of the human body, building on the work you’ve done at undergraduate level to achieve a more comprehensive knowledge base. You’ll be taught to assess and treat a wide range of physical conditions and injuries, learning advanced therapeutic exercises, and manual techniques. Physiotherapy students gain practical experience through clinical placements, working with all kinds of people in a diversity of healthcare settings. The programme emphasises a holistic approach to patient care, providing not only physical treatments, but also considering psychological and social factors influencing health.

Your course will be accredited by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), ensuring you meet the professional requirements for physiotherapy practice. Upon graduation, you can also register with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), which is the UK’s only physiotherapy-specific professional body, with more than 60,000 members. As you start professional work, you’ll begin a fulfilling career, making a significant impact on the physical health and rehabilitation of individuals across the UK.
